*Note before we start*
Hey everyone, before we get started here, I am sorry this is coming out so late. Me and Jarro are working together to get these posts out on Thursday on a regular basis and I couldn’t even get week 2 out (face palm emoji). I’ve had a rough two days, nothing major but things that have taken my mind off what’s important in life… Fantasy Football. All that to say, my bad, I will try to be better. Hope you enjoy this weeks picks, I enjoyed writing them…
Have you ever seen the movie “Signs”? If you haven’t, this 2002 thriller it’s peak M Night Shyamalan. It circles around the concept of aliens coming to earth but when you peel back the layers a bit, it’s not a sci-fi movie, nor an alien movie, it’s actually a pretty obvious critique of faith. At one very climatic moment in the movie, Mel Gibson (who is a former reverend the main protagonist) is explaining to Joaquin Phoenix (who plays his brother) that there are two kinds of people, people who believe that all the small things in life aren’t random but in actuality there’s a higher power making all of these things work together, then there’s the other type who believe it’s all random.
Here’s an extremely low resolution version that sure to make you happy that it’s no longer 2002
Now, why start off what appears to be weekly picks by talking about a movie from 2002? Great question.
We are one week into the NFL season and we all are faced with a question, what about last week was random and what was a sign of something bigger.
For example, there are some of you *cough MASON *cough who like to talk SHIT ABOUT MY BOY JAMES ROBINSON… sorry that got hostile, I am just very passionate about James Robinson (outside of the fact that I traded him)… anyways, take James Robinson. He’s a rookie RB, who has a clear cut starting job and looked really good last week. Is that a “sign” or was that just a random good day… Week 2 certainly isn’t anymore significate than any other week, a win is a win, a loss is a loss… but on the other hand, this week is huge, because we double our sample size and we start to see more clearly what’s real and what isn’t. In this week’s picks we decide what’s real and what isn’t….
*Editors Note, everything but the last two games were written before TNF, I am not liar, I kept in my takes*
Papa Tim vs Derek’s BDE
Welp, it’s kinda like I said last week at this time, any team that has Lamar Jackson is going to have a really high floor. I feel like playing Father Tim’s team is like playing a under talented AAU team with a great coach. Can they blow you off the court? Probably not, but they’re so fundamental if you aren’t on your shit they will take your cookies. Speaking of cookies, Derek might have taken mine with James Robinson. Also speaking of cookies, is Tyler Boyd in trouble? Didn’t seem like Joe Burrow was interested in sharing his cookies with him. If Connor is a full DNP today, I’d probably go Snell over Boyd. Could Boyd out score Snell? Of course, but I think Snell (assuming JC is a DNP) will have a decent role even if JC plays (because this injury is significant enough to hold him out of important practices), which says to me, Snell is the safer option. I would project Boyd to get around 7 catches and about 70ish yard and probably a touchdown. Snell on the other hand will probably run for 120 yards and two TDs. According to my projections. This will be a close game and I’d go with the safer option. Speaking of cookies, is Nyheim Hines the new Austin Ekler? If I was a betting man, I’d say yes… well not actually but the dudes got value and that would be a huge addition for Father Tim’s squad. Overall, this is a huge matchup when you think big picture because these two teams will probably be battling it out for a playoff spot.
Even though I love James Robinson, give me Father Time with a dub.
Jarro’s Landsharks vs Logan’s Legion
Can I go back to putting these picks out during the weekend?? It’d make this call a hell of a lot easier. Logan’s again putting in work on the trades landing super star Micheal Thomas, Jarvis Landry and Chark. The kid is out here hustling and damn it! I WANT TO SEE IT PAY OFF. Speaking of hustling, Jarro did some hustling of his own this week, dealing Watson for Gallup and Allen. I am so strongly in the “QB’s don’t matter” camp that it’s not funny. I think Jarro not only returned QB value, but also got a fill in WR. I think 6-10 points is probably what you’re looking at for most weeks from Gallup. Jarro’s got some big question marks following his week 1 loss though. Do Hunt and Chubb make each other unuseable? Is James Conner done? Does David Montgomery have starter value? You could even ask… were those results “Signs” or random?? I think Hunt and Chubb in the long run can be very useable together, both are extremely talented and can make for a two headed fantasy monster. Look for Nick Chubb to break out on TNF against the Bengals, but I think Hunt gets into the endzone as well. Give me 120ish yards for Chubb with 2 TDs, Hunt gets around 86 yards and as 2 TDS.
This is another huge game, one of these playoff teams is going to start in a 0-2 hole and starting 0-2 really makes you question what you’re doing with your life. I am going upset (?) here, NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND. Give me the most popular team on Twitter, GIVE ME THE LANDSHARKS.
Uncle Sammy’s Elite vs The Dahminators
Two teams that came away with surprising week 1 wins. Caleb’s team is solid, I think he can make the playoff this year but… I am a little worried about Kenyan Drake. I am no NFL genius but Chase Edmonds looked better to me than Kenyan Drake and I am not alone here. The deep fantasy football twitter chatter seemed to agree. Now, Drake got 10 more carries than Edmonds so I am not sounding the alarm yet but… it’s worth mentioning. Maxi’s team got way better when he got all-star Raheem Mostert. Did you know, last week on his screen pass TD Mostert reached a top speed of 22 mph? Last time someone ran that fast in a NFL game? Tyreek Hill two years ago. Radio Raheem can do it all baby!! The team still lacks a little bit of starter worthy depth. I’d like to see you be able to sit Gibson for a couple weeks till you see it. Don’t panic on Ekler yet, he will be fine. TGIII looked pretty good on Sunday, even though the Falcons weren’t in a running game script. Diggs has decent value too, Josh Allen isn’t a good NFL QB but he has Brett Farve like fantasy value, dude slings the pill and doesn’t ask questions.
You know who will be asking questions? Caleb, when he catches an L this week. GIVE ME THE DAHMINATORS!
Mason’s Mistress vs The Bastards (Should be Jake’s Jive Turkeys)
Mason was able to squeeeeeeeeeekkkk a win by Ben last week, thanks to Juju reminding us that he is still Juju, something that should surprise no one. Mason’s team under preformed last week but the new look Mistress is probably the deepest fantasy team I’ve ever seen. The team is really good and if he can trade for some stars he might be able to amass the best team in the league. Jake’s team had a demoralizing defeat after all the off-season hype. Barely managing to get over 100 points. Now, I am far away from dismissing this team all together, still has 3 super stars leading the team. That means any given week he can put up a huge score. I worry though when it comes to the secondary players. I am not a DJ Moore guy, we know this, but there’s real reason to be concerned here. The Panthers scored 30 points in a 34-30 shoot out and DJ Moore scored 7 points. I am not sounding the alarm here, I am not saying DJ Moore isn’t a top 20 WR, I am just saying he is closer to 20 than he is 10. I am not one to do victory laps but… me and Jake really argued over two players this off season, Tarik Cohen and N’Keal Harry. Those two COMBINED for a whopping 9 points last week. Both Cohen and Harry are the same caliber player. Not bad enough to drop. Not good enough to start. The good news is Aiyuk wasn’t listed on the injury report this week and Reagor at least caught the one bomb thrown his way, which is nice.
Bad news, it’s time to crank up the panic because Jake’s going to fall to 0-2. Mistress wins.
Hanna’s Honeys vs Adam’s Island Survivors
Champion’s do champion things. Hanna did just that last week. The team didn’t have two of their best 3 players and still dropped 130. Which means, at full strength, this team is going to have Emmanuel Sanders (when Thomas comes back) and Noah Fant on the bench. Which is nice. Adam went into full blown panic mode after week 1, and honestly I don’t blame him but I am not sure if I like his panicked trades. Getting JT is huge. Anytime you get a young unquestioned starter, who has the skill set to be a star, there isn’t much more you can ask for. But, you gave up a player who is already a star. A real “bird in the hand vs two in the bush situation” here. Now, I have my concerns about Michael Thomas but dudes still a top 8ish player anyway you slice it.
As for this week, sadly I think Adam only has a punchers chance… and by punchers chance one of two things have two happen 1. Hanna’s players succumb to a series of unfortunate events. 2. Adam’s team has multiple players score over 30 points. I’ll bet on neither. Honey’s go 2-0.
Ben’s Team vs Mitchell’s Lobos
Well, for fear of being self-indulgent, I’m not going to talk about the Lobo’s… But let’s take a deep dive into Ben’s team. David Johnson looked good on NFL’s opening night, the best part of Johnson is Bill O’Brian’s commitment to not admitting that DHop trade was terrible, so I’ve got to imagine David Johnson gets forced the ball. Speaking of being forced the DeAndre Hopkins got an absurd number of targets last week and should be able to return top 15 player value. Also, is there anyone with a surer role than Tyler Lockett? I gotta believe he and Russell Wilson are the best of friends… I also gotta believe Russ has an “unlimitedddddd” amount of friends The rest of the starting lineup has some questions, DaVante Parker had a nice break out year last year but does that translate to this year? Was it just shadow coverage from Gilmore last week or was last year a fluke? Probably the better question is can he overcome poor QB play or even rookie Tua? Sammy Watkins checked in for his annual huge week 1, don’t worry… that’s all that’s happening there. Finally “F1” Terry McLaurin. “Scary Terry” had 6 points last week in a game that Washington not only won but they were also down most of the game, putting them in a passing game script. I don’t think Terry will reach his full protentional with Haskins at QB (most obvious thing ever written).
Speaking of the most obvious thing ever written… Lobos. Victory formation. Collision Course.
