You know the feeling…
It’s that sinking feeling that all of that time you spent reading, studying, grinding over the past 6 months has been a gigantic waste of time.
We all know the feeling.
I want to convince you to keep playing fantasy football. Not because it’s worth your time (it is NOT) but for other reasons… Let’s go on a journey.
The majority of the league at some point has had an address in Lake Wales.
Mitchell
Hanna
Tim
Jarro
Logan
Derek
Jake
Gray
Adam
Caleb
All of us have lived near each other at some point. Most of us no longer live in the same city.
Mason
Ben
Max
These three losers didn’t even live in Lake Wales, we just met them through camp or dodgeball and pizza.
I hate to say it… but there’s no logical reason for all 13 of us to stay friends. We have different interests. We have different lifestyles. We are different ages. We have different careers. Different schedules. Different religions. Political views. Marital situations. The list would go on and on… But the cherry on top… we mostly live spread out amongst the state. Most of us, at some point, were in close proximity… then we left. Moved. Got new friends. Stopped coming to camp.
Have you ever moved?
Have you ever had friend in another city?
With few exceptions; when you move, your relationship with friends in that city changes. The majority of time, you end up not talking to that person as much. Sometimes you stop talking all together.
There is no substitute for seeing each other face to face. I get that. But at the same time, we all have been able to maintain some sort of relationship together. And those relationships aren’t just surface level. We celebrate together, we mourn together, we let each other into our lives. All of that without seeing each other face to face more than a handful of times a year. How? Why?
The how is obvious. The why is not.
How did we branch something that over 60 MILLION PEOPLE play into something more? Well… time invested. Time invested into our teams and time invested into each other. If it wasn’t for this league, I would have quit play fantasy football years ago, because its dumb as fuck (the bitterness comes out only 350 words in) but in all seriousness. This is a game. A game that takes days away from my family, my job and my goals here on this earth. Why on earth would I give days of my short life on this earth to fantasy football?
Because it keeps us together.
Sure, I like winning, who doesn’t but at the end of the day, if your only goal here in the MFL is to win, I’d say you’re missing the point. The point is announcing the birth of a child. The point is coming to a group with pain and knowing that there are people on the other side that are actually with you in the suffering. The point is surviving a global pandemic together. That is what the MFL is about. That is what makes this all worth it.
There’s a scene in the sitcom “The League” where Nick Kroll disrupts a Jewish Sunday Sabbath by using his electronic device to make a lineup adjustment. He then proclaims “FANTASY FOOTBALL IS MY RELIGION”
2013 Mitchell winced.
2013 Mitchell asked himself if he spent as much time reading scripture as he did researching football.
2013 Mitchell thought about Exodus 20:3-6. Jonah 2:8.
2013 Mitchell thought fantasy football was about football.
2020 Mitchell knows 90% of the people in this league wouldn’t have a piece of my life if it wasn’t for this league.
2020 Mitchell knows that he is a better person because of you and if it wasn’t for this league who knows where I would be. Could I have used this time for something more profitable? 1000%. Would I have made other friends? Probably. Would I have been this close with them? No chance.
In 2020, I bared my soul to you in my writings.
In 2020, you let me into your life more than ever.
This group is my social media. This group is my friend group. And I am damn proud to call each and every one of you my friends.
If the MFL is my religion… I’d say I could do a hell of a lot worse.
I implore you to read the chat when you’re pooping.
I implore you to send a text to one another about things other than football.
I implore you to play fantasy football in 2021, not for the football.
For the league.
